Who is a better architect nature or human being? The question is ambiguous, but one of the best places to answer it is the southernmost province of Armenia Syunik. Here you can find the natural and historic treasures of Armenia in one place. You don't even have to walk for miles to enjoy it, because here is the world's longest cableway Wings of Tatev between Halidzor village and Tatev monastery.
The aerial tramway was officially launched on 16 October 2010. In the same year it set the Guinness World Record for the longest non-stop reversible aerial tramway. But not only the length (5,752 m) of the cableway is record-setting, but also the period within which it was installed – just 10 months.
From the height of 320 meters in about 12 minutes you can reach to Tatev monastery. When the first cabin reaches the Tatev station, the second one arrives at the Halidzor station. After the Wings are reloaded, the movement starts again in the opposite direction. Each cabin accommodates 30 passengers and one steward. The ropeway can accommodate about 240 passengers per hour. Powerful pillars divide the ropeway into four sections.
Tatev Gateway was established as a non-commercial project; the entire profit from the project was invested in the restoration of Tatev Monastery and the development of the local community. It has attracted the attention of many people, including celebrities, for example World Champions Levon Aronyan and Magnus Carlsen.
The Tatev Monastery
Wings of Tatev is the shortest, most picturesque and impressive route to 9th-century monastery complex Tatev, a center of education and religion in the Middle Ages. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the monastery hosted one of the most important Armenian medieval universities, the University of Tatev, which contributed to the advancement of science, religion and philosophy, reproduction of books and development of miniature painting. Now it is one of the country's most important religious centers and a major tourist attraction.
Satan’s Bridge or Devil’s Bridge is a natural monument, built by the nature itself. The fact that the bridge is not a hand made one makes it more interesting and noteworthy. It is situated right under the mountain where the Tatev Monastery is located, at the bottom of Vorotan Canyon. This natural monument is 30 meters long and 50-60 meters wide. The legend goes that the people running to Tatev were blocked by the river nearby. And before the invaders could attack, a rock bridge was magically spread on the river, saving the people in despair.
The Great Hermitage of Tatev
This medieval architectural complex which used to be a renowned religious center is situated on the right cliff of the river Vorotan, where the river intersects with its tributary Tatev. It was founded by monks in 1608–1613. The terrible earthquake of 1658 forced the hermits to leave the community and build a new one several kilometers from Kharants – monastery complex the Great Hermitage of Tatev. The Hermitage of Tatev is visible from the cabin windows on the third, longest section of Wings of Tatev cableway. A steep switchback road descends to the Hermitage from Tatev
